Friends or Foes?

This term, our class is exploring life cycles and interactions of living things as part of the 'Friends or Foes' unit. We started by collecting flowers, looking at their cross-sections and learning the scientific names for the different parts of a flower. Did you know there are male flowers and female flowers?

Picture Perfect!

Can you guess where these students spent their holidays from their personally designed postcards?!

Summary Sundaes

I am so proud of the students in 4B for the incredible summaries they have been writing in class over the last few weeks. They have been learning different strategies to help them summarise and I decided to make the last lesson a fun, creative way to bring it all together. Each scoop of ice-cream represents a part of the story (beginning, middle and end), the characters and setting are written on the banana and the title of the story is the cherry on top!
Check out these work samples of 4 different books, titled:
-Stewed Bugs & Onions
-It's Time for a Haircut
-Billy Sings in the Choir
-My Sad Skeleton

***All summaries are displayed outside our classroom, so be sure to drop by and check them out!***

The students in 4B have been very busy this term practicing some reading strategies introduced through the 'CAFE Reading Program'. One of the strategies we all use whilst reading is VISUALISING. That is, making a mental image as we read. As part of this unit, I got the students to turn a squiggle into a picture (think Mr Squiggle for those who remember him!!)... look how creative they all are! You can see the original squiggle at the top and the student creations below.

Colour My Story

We have been very busy getting creative in 4B. The students have been involved in a project called ‘Colour My Story’, in which they had to draw a picture (some managed to draw many!!) to be included in a colouring-in book (which has now been published), for children in Uganda, Africa. Michelle (a friend of Miss Shields’) volunteers for Orphfund- an organisation that helps abandoned, orphaned and vulnerable children around the world. She will be personally delivering the published colouring-in books to the children in Uganda next month. The excitement and buzz in the air, as well as the sense of pride the students felt was priceless, as they created their masterpieces for children much less fortunate than themselves.

Check out the video link below of our experience! :)
